Brides's Cake
- 1 cup shortening
- 2 cups sugar
- 1 teaspoon almond or vanilla extract
- ¾ cup milk
- 31/2 cups flour
- 3 teaspoons baking powder
- Whites of six eggs
Beat shortening to a cream, adding sugar gradually; add vanilla flavoring and beat until smooth. Add alternately a little at a time milk and flour which has been sifted three times with baking powder. Beat whites of eggs until dry, and add to batter, folding in very lightly without beating. Bake in large greased loaf pan in moderate oven about one hour.

Icing can be formed into shapes such as flowers and leaves using a pastry bag. A pastry bag is an often cone- or triangular-shaped, hand-held bag made from cloth, paper, or plastic that is used to pipe semi-solid foods by pressing them through a narrow opening at one end. Aside from icings and frostings, pastry bags are commonly used to shape meringue and whipped cream, and to fill doughnuts with jelly or vanilla custard. Using icing to decorate cakes is commonly used with wedding cakes, anniversary cakes and birthday cakes.
Vanilla Chocolate Sauce
- 1¾ cups water
- ¾ cup sugar
- 1/2 tablespoon cornstarch
- 2 squares chocolate or 6 tablespoons cocoa
- 1/2 cup cold water
- ⅛ teaspoon salt
- 1 tablespoon butter
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
Boil water and sugar 5 minutes. Mix grated chocolate or cocoa with cornstarch and cold water. Add to first mixture and boil 5 minutes. Add salt, butter, and vanilla and serve hot.
